Mardi Gras 2027 Date and What to Wear
Mardi Gras 2027 falls on Tuesday, 9 February.
That is the date to plan around. Carnival season starts on Twelfth Night, 6 January, and builds through the weeks that follow. The biggest parades run the final weekend and the Monday and Tuesday.
Dressing for it, honestly
Most Mardi Gras advice is about costumes. This is about the twelve hours you are actually outside.
Layer, because February here lies. It can be 72 degrees at noon and 48 at night. A heavyweight tee under a jacket beats a thin costume and regret.
Wear something you do not mind losing. Whatever you have on is going to meet a drink, a horse, a ladder and the ground.
Shoes decide your day. You will stand for six hours and walk more than you think. Nothing new, nothing white.
Purple, green and gold is a choice, not a requirement. Locals wear what they would wear anyway. Visitors usually overdress by a factor of three.
Pockets. No bag is better than a bag.
What locals actually wear
A good heavyweight tee or crop top, a jacket that can be tied around the waist, and shoes that have already proven themselves. The people who look best on Fat Tuesday are usually the ones who look like they live here.
